President Donald Trump on Thursday named former U.S. Federal Aviation Administration official Chris Rocheleau as acting FAA administrator. The position had been vacant since former administrator Mike Whitaker stepped down on Jan. 20.

The appointment came a day after a fatal air crash in Washington involving an American Eagle flight and a U.S. Army helicopter.
Rocheleau had spent about 22 years in two stints at the FAA in multiple roles, including deputy associate administrator for aviation safety, chief of staff and deputy associate administrator for policy, international affairs and environment, according to the FAA and his LinkedIn profile.
Most recently, Rocheleau was COO of the National Business Aviation Association. He was a senior policy advisor for the TSA from 2002 to 2005.
Aviation International News last week reported that Rocheleau had returned to the FAA as deputy administrator.
