The Condado Plaza Hilton in San Juan
closed its casino on July 22 after 40 years of operation.
A hotel spokesman said casino revenue was down in
recent years due to the proliferation of non-casino gaming machines on the
island. With the closing, 144 employees lost their jobs.
All mention of the casino facility had been
removed from the hotel’s website by late Wednesday. The facility will likely be
turned into a ballroom.
The Condado casino is the seventh casino to close
in the past five years in Puerto Rico, primarily in the San Juan area,
according to the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association.
Puerto Rico has 20 casinos still in operation.
