San Ysidro Ranch: The Kennedys slept here

KennedysThe John F. Kennedys honeymooned at the San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif. That's San Ysidro's story, and it's sticking to it.

Yet some sources say the then-senator from Massachusetts and his bride honeymooned at the family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., following their Sept. 12, 1953, wedding in Newport, R.I.

Others point to rumors that JFK and Jackie whiled away those early days of wedded bliss at the Round Hill Hotel & Villas in Montego Bay, Jamaica. (A spokeswoman for the resort said the Kennedys stayed there "numerous times but there is nobody left who can confirm the rumors." The resort promotes them anyway.)

The official source, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, says the couple honeymooned in Acapulco after spending their first night at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. It does not say where they went after their visit to Mexico. Was it Cape Cod? Was it Montego Bay? Or was it the exclusive hideaway in the hills of Montecito, just south of Santa Barbara?

The 115-year-old San Ysidro Ranch, which boasts a cottage named in honor of the Kennedys, harbors no ambivalence.

"John and Jackie checked into San Ysidro Ranch following their trip to Acapulco," a spokeswoman said. She produced the proof: a guest book showing the future president's signature and the date: Sept. 28, 1953.

That should be the end of the story. But at San Ysidro Ranch, myth and history tend to mingle.

Ranch legend has it that Jack and Jackie requested cream puffs during their stay. So since that time, 55 years ago this month, San Ysidro Ranch has been serving "legendary" cream puffs to guests who stay in the Kennedy Suite.
