Underage gambler costs Borgata $105,000

The Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City was ordered to pay a record fine for its failure to stop a 19-year-old from gambling. The minimum age for casino gambling in New Jersey is 21.

The New Jersey Casino Control Commission fined the Borgata $105,000, the largest penalty imposed on a single casino in an underage gambling case.

The teenager had visited the casino 24 days in the course of a year before a dealer discovered he was too young to gamble. During that period, he bought more than $34,000 in chips and earned in excess of $1,000 in comps. According to the division, he won as much as $8,600 and lost as much as $7,840.

The casino was also penalized $75,000 for serving alcohol to a group of teens at its B Bar, and its security shift supervisor was fined $1,000 for not notifying state gaming enforcement officials about the incident in a timely manner.

Also in Atlantic City, the Tropicana and the Trump Taj Mahal this week were fined $10,000 per underage player. The fines were for violations that occurred in August. The Tropicana was fined $10,000 and the Taj Mahal $40,000.
