NEWTON SQUARE, Pa. -- Apple Vacations will implement a policy Sept.
22 that requires agents, when booking customers using credit cards
for payment, to provide each card's security code as well as the
account number.
The rule applies to phone or online reservations.
Because the security code does not appear on receipts, requiring
use of that number provides added security for clients and
merchants.
Apple said it was responding to a growing banking industry
practice of requiring the code when a merchant does not have the
customer's card in hand.
The operator said the move was not a specific response to a
recent credit card fraud case.
In that case, travel agent Valerie Loper cheated Apple out of
$135,000, according to the prosecutor's office in Canton, Ohio.
Loper is to be sentenced Sept. 22.
