Delta Vacations launches Cuba packages: Travel Weekly

Delta Vacations launched hotel and flight packages for independent travelers to Havana, Varadero and Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba.

The carrier began service to Cuba on Dec. 1 with flights from Atlanta, Miami and New York.

The new packages, available for booking now with travel from Jan. 5, offer stays at select hotels and optional tours in each of the three cities, including the Hotel Nacional and the Melia Habana in Havana.

"Experiencing Cuba is a bucket list item for many American travelers," said John Caldwell, president of Delta Vacations.

"We are thrilled to now offer this opportunity for travelers wanting to experience the Cuban way of life, its energetic community and distinct culture," he said.

Travelers must comply with the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations that stipulate that itineraries must fall into one of 12 authorized categories of travel permitted to Cuba since pure leisure tourism to Cuba is still prohibited.

Clients who book Delta Vacations air/hotel packages receive 1,000 SkyMiles in addition to any credited flown miles they accrue. The packages include mandatory Cuban medical insurance as well.

Delta Vacations plans to offer people-to-people programs in the coming months for five- and seven-night stays. The programs will include an itinerary with activities, tours, interactions with the Cuban people and lectures that provide insights into the country's culture and history.
