Allianz Global Assistance is temporarily enabling travelers to make medical and cancellation claims not typically covered because of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Insurance claims due to known events, epidemics or fear of travel are not typically covered.

“For a limited period, the company will nevertheless accommodate claims for trip cancellation and emergency medical care for customers who become ill with the coronavirus as well as cancellation claims for customers traveling to China, South Korea, and the Lombardy and Veneto regions of Italy,” Allianz said in a statement. “This is a temporary action that the company hopes will help customers who become ill or who are struggling with the decision on whether to travel to these destinations.”

Allianz will “until further notice” accommodate claims for emergency medical care and transportation for customers who become ill from the new coronavirus while on their trip; trip-cancellation and interruption if a customer becomes ill with Covid-19 before or during their trip; and nonrefundable, non-transferrable trip-cancellation expenses for those who bought a plan before Jan. 22 for a trip to mainland China, South Korea or Italy’s Lombardy or Veneto regions departing before April 1.

Allianz also said customers can change the effective dates of their plans in case they have a new or reschduled trip. It is also refunding the cost of insurance plans for trips that are canceled by suppliers for “a temporary period,” so long as no claims have been filed under that plan.

“This is undoubtedly a difficult time for both travelers and the travel industry,” said Mike Nelson, CEO of global travel insurance at Allianz Partners. “By taking these steps today, we want to support our customers in a very meaningful way. Our ultimate goal is to help both our customers and our distribution partners to navigate what we hope will be a short-lived but admittedly very serious situation.”
