When your clients are traveling internationally, it's important to scrutinize countries' entry requirements — and understand the local Covid-19 testing landscape.

That message comes from Kellie Bishop, president of Travel Leaders in Charlottesville, Va.

Bishop would know. She recently had to deal with a number of issues on a client trip to Antarctica. The clients were headed to Buenos Aires first, but one of the travelers was initially denied boarding because her Covid-19 test was administered 74 hours prior, instead of the required 72. A number of other factors were at play, but the clients did make it, thanks to help from their advisor.

"I find these rules are a bit confusing, which countries are actually enforcing the number of hours versus the number of days," Bishop said.

For instance, she visited France in December. Entry rules had just changed, and travelers were required to be tested within 48 hours of entry, previously 72 hours. She got her test two calendar days before traveling, but the agent looked at the date of the test, not specifically the time.

That said, though, her clients did have an issue in traveling to Argentina.

"To be safe, I would follow the number of hours as closely as possible," Bishop said, but also advised not leaving tests to the absolute last minute because of potential delays in obtaining lab results.

She took a trip to Dubai in September 2020. Her fellow travelers went to two testing centers before they flew. Everyone did get their test results back, but some got them with just hours to spare.

To that end, Bishop encouraged fellow advisors to understand their local testing landscape so they can advise customers.

"I think, for all of us, we have to experience this ourselves," she said. "I have myself been Covid-tested probably 10 times at various places. You have to find out which ones are turning them around most quickly for people. That's a real anxiety-producer when you have everything on the line and you're waiting for that test."
