Travel Insured upgrades ticket coverage

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Travel Insured International upgraded its Comprehensive insurance plan to add an airline ticket benefit, whereby the entire cost of a nonrefundable ticket is covered -- rather than just the typical $100 change fee -- if a customer's trip is canceled.

The aim is to provide coverage when ground and air arrangements are purchased separately, said company president Peter Gehris. The client must buy sufficient insurance to cover the value of all nonrefundable trip components.

In addition, the insurer's terrorism benefit now covers incidents in the U.S. as well as abroad. Terrorism coverage, a preexisting-conditions waiver and bankruptcy and default benefits apply if clients buy insurance within 10 days of deposit. That timeframe previously was described as seven business days, which confused customers, Gehris said.

Travel Insured also enhanced its groups programs so tour organizers can offer participants the same coverage for terrorism, preexisting conditions and bankruptcy and default.

Previously, the group programs did not even offer bankruptcy and default protection. Also, the preexisting-conditions waiver was available only if coverage was purchased on the day the initial deposit was made. Now, tour members also have 10 days to buy their insurance.

The company also added an option in its plans for an increased medical-expense benefit of $25,000 per person (from $10,000 in the basic plan) and an increased medical evacuation/repatriation benefit of $100,000 (from $50,000). This option is not part of the group plans.
