Spring break travel is depressed compared with 2019, but Amadeus data points to some positive signs on the horizon.
According to Amadeus, hotel occupancy is still below 2019 levels, but the number of markets with occupancy greater than 50% has tripled since November. There are 33 markets with occupancy over 50% this spring break season, Amadeus said, compared with only 10 during the Thanksgiving holiday last fall.

The top ten markets according to Amadeus are Key West, 90% hotel occupancy; Oak Harbor, Wash., 86%; Emporia, Kan., 80%; Marathon, Fla., 79%; Auburn/Lewiston, Maine, 72%; Sedona, Ariz., 70%; Sierra Vista, Ariz., 70%; and Alpine and McAllen, Texas, and Yuma, Ariz., each with 66% occupancy.
The top states by hotel occupancy are Florida (32%), Arizona (31%), Hawaii (30%), Alaska and Nevada (each 26%) and South Carolina (25%).
Based on air travel data, Amadeus found the top destinations U.S. travelers are flying to are Cancun, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
Amadeus offered a closer look at how travel to Cancun stacked up to a more normal year, 2019. In March 2019, there were 37.5% more trips to Cancun from U.S. airports in the month of March.
