HONOLULU -- Nadine Godwin, Travel Weekly editor-at-large, received
ASTA's 2002 Travel Journalist of the Year Award at the ASTA
convention here.
"Nadine Godwin has covered retail travel since 1969, first for
three years at Travel Agent magazine, and then, for the past 30
years, at Travel Weekly. Her articles, columns and books have
educated thousands of travel agents," said ASTA president Richard
Copland.
A native of Iowa, Godwin earned a B.A. in journalism from the
University of Iowa and worked for three years at the Des Moines
Register & Tribune before moving to New York, where she worked
for the Teachers College of Columbia University, editing TC Week,
an internal publication.
Since joining Travel Weekly in 1972 she has served as a
reporter, editor, managing editor, columnist and
editor-in-chief.
In the 1970s she literally wrote the book on automated
reservations and back-office technology, authoring The Complete
Guide to Travel Agency Automation. During an 18-month period in
1996 and 1997, she was editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly UK, which
was then an affiliated publication.
She currently holds the position of editor-at-large, focusing on
the retail agency sector.
She is the third trade journalist to receive the ASTA honor for
contributions to the industry while working at Travel Weekly.
Former editor-in-chief Alan Fredericks received the award in 1995
and long-time Washington Bureau Chief, the late Fran Durbin, was
the recipient in 2000.
Travel Weekly's current editor in chief, Arnie Weissmann, was
honored in 1996 for developing Weissmann Travel Reports, now
published by Travel Weekly's parent, Northstar Travel Media.
