HONG KONG -- The
Walt Disney Co. opened Hong Kong Disneyland on Lantau Island Sept.
12 with a grand opening celebration attended by CEO Michael Eisner
and his successor-to-be Robert A. Iger, now president and COO, as
well as Zeng Oinghong, the vice president of the Peoples Republic
of China and Donald Tsang, chief executive of the government of
Hong Kong.
A joint venture
of the Walt Disney Co. and the Hong Kong government, the Hong Kong
Disneyland Resort features two hotels, the 400-room Hong Kong
Disneyland Hotel and the 600-room Disneys Hollywood
Hotel.
The park includes
many of Disneys familiar rides and attractions, such as the Jungle
River Cruise, the Mad Hatter Tea Cups and Space Mountain, and also
features Broadway-style performances and souvenir shops.
The park is
projected to generate $19 billion in benefits to Hong Kong over the
next 40 years.
