World Autism Month is coming to a close this week, which to me seemed like a good time to highlight Beaches Resorts' commitment to neurodiverse travelers. Beaches was the first resort company in the world to be recognized as an Advanced Certified Autism Center by the IBCCES (International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards), a global organization that provides training and certification for professionals working with individuals with autism, neurodiversity and other cognitive disorders.

Available at Beaches Turks & Caicos and Beaches Negril, the programming is part of Beaches Resorts' mission to offer a truly inclusive vacation experience.

"Many families with neurodivergent children are looking for vacations where they can truly relax." Heather Effs, corporate manager of entertainment at Beaches Resorts, told me. "Our team members are trained to understand and support a wide range of sensory and communication needs, helping every interaction feel natural, welcoming and stress-free."

The autism-friendly programming includes tailored, on-property experiences, guidance on dietary needs and flexible, multibedroom accommodations for families who travel with additional support.

A 'Buddies' system

The resorts employ Beaches Buddies, who are staff members providing one-on-one support to children of all ages. Beaches Buddies are accredited by the IBCCES and are available to spend a few hours with travelers or assist throughout the entire trip, whether that's joining guests for activities or helping navigate sensory-friendly spaces.

The service is available for a fee, though Beaches is currently running a promotion that includes a free Beaches Buddy for qualifying bookings made by the end of this month. The offer is valid for travel between Aug. 22 and Nov. 2 and requires a minimum four-night stay.

There are other services available to guests, as well:

Special services team: Before clients even leave home, they can chat with a dedicated team to plan sensory-friendly dining, request specific cleaning products for sensitivities and get tips on airport transfers.

Printed sensory guides: The IBCCES-developed sensory guides can help clients choose activities based on sensory ratings, so there are no overwhelming surprises.

Kids camps: Every staff member has at least 40 hours of autism sensitivity training, and the camps are stocked with sensory toys and comfort aids.

Meet Julia: As part of their partnership with "Sesame Street," guests can meet Julia, a 4-year-old character with autism, who leads an "Amazing Art With Julia" activity.

The Scuba Program: The Beaches' diving program is inclusive, offering specialized courses for people on the spectrum.

In addition, Beaches Turks & Caicos hosts an Autism Inclusion Week, held this year from Oct. 19 to 23, which is a full week of events specifically designed for neurodiverse families. Anticipated events include special arts and crafts with "Sesame Street" characters, water activities and dedicated parties.
