Baha Mar and Atlantis, the two megaresort complexes in the Bahamas, will delay their reopenings even as other properties begin to welcome back guests on Oct. 15.

Covid restrictions have eased up on the Bahamas. But neither resort has confirmed their reopening dates. In Baha Mar's case, an October date had been announced in June as a possibility.

However, Graeme Davis, president, said in a statement Sept. 11 that "Baha Mar is actively monitoring key indicators on a local and global scale to determine the best date for our reopening. Ease of travel restrictions, the number of Covid-19 cases in our community and international markets, as well as willingness to travel and demand are all essential factors in our decision on when and how to resume operations."

Davis said he is eager to welcome his associates back to work and guests to his resort, "but we have to ensure that it is done in a secure and economically sustainable way that is conducive to the continued success of the resort destination."

Since its closure in March, Baha Mar has provided more than $50 million in severance payments and maintained full medical benefits for its 3,500 remaining associates. In addition, it will continue to provide benefits  and 30% of the base salary for up to 90 days in case the resort opens sooner. (The resort complex is made up of several hotels, including the Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood.

Atlantis has no reopening date at this time, according to a spokesperson. The resort had already postponed its original reopening date of early July and then later announced an extended closure due to the rise of Covid-19 cases in the U.S.

Along with Bahamas' hotel reopenings expected in mid-October, all beaches will reopen and social gathering up to 10 people will be permitted.

Visitors are still subject to a mandatory quarantine at their own expense at a hotel, private club, rental accommodations or on a private boat, must complete an electronic Bahamas Health Visa application before departure from home and upload results of a negative Covid-19 test taken within five days of arrival.
