For the first time, Carnival Cruise Lines will ask guests to pay a higher daily gratuity if they stay in suite accommodations.

Carnival is suggesting a $13.95 daily tip for suite guests. Currently the rate is $12, the same as non-suite cabins.

The new suite-level gratuity is being introduced with bookings from Sept. 1 as Carnival raises its suggested gratuity for non-suite guests from $12 to $12.95.

Currently, Carnival is the only major cruise line to make no distinction between the two types of accommodations in setting gratuities.

The amounts can be prepaid or automatically added to a passenger’s shipboard account, subject to adjustment at the guest services desk before the end of the cruise. Guests with bookings after Sept. 1 who prepay gratuities by May 9 will not be subject to the increase.

Carnival last raised its tip amount from $11.50 to $12 in October 2014.
