Carnival Cruise Line will pilot a new technology program to ensure guests are following the health protocols needed to sail its newest ship, the Mardi Gras.

Carnival is trying out Verifly, an app that works as a health passport. Passengers download the app and upload proof of vaccination and Covid test results ahead of their sailing so it can be verified before they board, streamlining embarkment.

Verifly has been used by American Airlines, Hyatt, British Airways and the Malta Tourism Authority

Carnival expects to expand use of the app across its fleet once it tests the service on Mardi Gras, a ship introduced in 2021 with the capacity to carry 6,500 passengers.

The cruise line is also finalizing plans to expand in-terminal testing of vaccinated guests with a focus on three- and four-day cruises. Passengers would have to pre-register for the test, although Carnival warns that capacity would be limited to the resources of testing providers.

Carnival currently requires almost all passengers be vaccinated, allowing some exceptions for children or adults who can provide confirmation from a doctor they cannot get the vaccine for medical reasons. Passengers are required to undergo Covid testing before embarkation and wear masks indoors on the ship.

Carnival has returned 19 of its 22 U.S.-based ships to operation since the pause in cruising in 2020, including Carnival Sunshine, which resumed a year-round schedule sailing from Charleston, S.C., on Jan. 13.
