Greek cruise line Celestyal said that one of its ships, Celestyal Discovery, was recently refueled in Lavrion using a marine biofuel blend.
The fuel combines conventional marine fuel with a biofuel derived from recycled used cooking oils. Celestyal said the blend is credited with reducing carbon-dioxide emissions by 21%.
Celestyal COO George Koumpenas said, "This initiative marks a meaningful shift toward sustainable cruising. We are proud that Celestyal Discovery is taking the lead in reducing the environmental footprint of the cruise sector in Greece."
The 1,360-guest Celestyal Discovery, the former AidaAura, joined the Celestyal fleet in November 2023 and has recently undergone a multimillion-euro refurbishment.
From April to November, the Discovery will sail three- and four-night Greek island cruises departing Athens, calling at Mykonos, Kusadasi, Patmos, Rhodes and Santorini.
The ship will reposition to the Arabian Gulf for the winter season, sailing three- and four-night night Arabia cruises departing Abu Dhabi, calling at Dubai, Sir Bani Yas Island, Doha, Khasab and Ras al Khaimah.
