Costa Classica damaged in collision

The 1,308-passenger Costa Classica was gashed Monday in a collision with a Belgian cargo vessel near Shanghai, the cruise ship's home port.

The accident occurred at the mouth of the Yangtze River at the end of a four-day Asia cruise. The Japan-Korea-Hong Kong cruise scheduled to depart Monday was canceled.

The collision put a 60-foot gash above the water line in the starboard side of the ship. The cruise line said that the starboard superstructure of Deck 5 was damaged, and that repairs would be completed in a few days.

Costa said some passengers reported to the ship's medical staff for minor injuries, and that three were sent to a hospital ashore. All were discharged, said the cruise line.

Costa said it is working closely with the Marine Safety Administration of Shanghai to investigate the incident.
