Cruise and Maritime Voyages said it will become the first line to sail cruises from Puerto Penasco, a Mexican port at the northern end of the Gulf of California. Puerto Penasco is about a 4-hour drive from Phoenix.

CMV said an itinerary called "Treasures of the Sea of Cortez" will sail in December 2019 and in January and February of 2020 with rates starting at $1,599 per person.

The 12-day cruises will sail on the 550-passenger Astoria.

Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point, could be an alternative for passengers from Arizona and neighboring states who would otherwise drive to Los Angeles to take a cruise. Using the port also eliminates the need to sail around Baja California to get to the Sea of Cortez.
