The Alaska cruise port of Icy Strait Point said a $23.7 million contract has been awarded to Turnagain Marine Construction to build a 400-foot pier for cruise ships.

Since the port opened a decade ago, passengers have landed via tender.

The contract was awarded by the Hoonah Cruise Ship Dock Company, a public-private partnership between the City of Hoonah, Huna Totem Corp. (the owners of Icy Strait Point) and the state of Alaska.

Construction is expected to start next spring and be finished by mid-August in time for the tail end of the Alaska cruise season. The port anticipates 75 ship calls next year.
