Royal Caribbean
International took the wraps off one of the final features to be revealed on
Harmony of the Seas: a 10-story slide called the Ultimate Abyss.
“It’s going to be very thrilling. It’s not a
water slide. It’s something completely different,” said Alison Frazier, Royal
Caribbean’s director of entertainment and guest activities in a YouTube video.
The dual slides will at the
aft of Harmony, connecting Deck 16 where the FlowRider surfing machines are
located, with Deck 5 near the Aqua Theater.
At first, the purple
stainless steel slides plunge off the lip of Deck 16, then corkscrew back
beneath the deck and around two large support pillars in the large void in the
interior of the ship.
Before entering the slide,
riders will walk out on what Frazier said is a “very high, very see-through”
glass platform. Riders will get a mat to slide on. “You slide all the way down
to the Boardwalk.”
The 5,479-passenger
Harmony, set for delivery in June, is the third in the Oasis class and the
first one to have slides. In addition to the Ultimate Abyss, there is a trio of
three-deck water slides dubbed The Perfect Storm. Harmony will be the first Royal Caribbean ship
to have water slides.
