Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled calls this week for Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Jewel in Roatan, Honduras, following the death of a crew member there in a suspected robbery.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, Norwegian said it was shocked and saddened by the incident, which occurred on April 6.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the crew member,” the statement said. It also said local authorities are investigating and have a suspect in custody.
In a warning posted on Dec. 24, 2013, the U.S. State Department said the level of crime and violence in Honduras remains “critically high.” It advised U.S. travelers to Honduras to avoid wearing jewelry and carrying large sums of money or displaying cash, ATM/credit cards or other valuables. They should also avoid walking at night in most areas of Honduras or walking alone on beaches, historic ruins and trails, the posting said.
The warning identified several areas and cities in Honduras where crime is most prevalent. The island of Roatan was not among them.
