NEW YORK -- At least one cruise ship is scheduled to head out of the New York region today after heavy snow delayed Sunday departures.

The MSC Meraviglia had been scheduled to depart from the Brooklyn cruise terminal Sunday night and will now leave today "at lunchtime," said a spokesperson for MSC Cruises.

"The closure of seaports in New York due to a winter storm was a planned precautionary measure made by the local authorities in the interests of passenger safety for all cruise lines and led, for us, to a delayed departure for MSC Meraviglia," the spokesperson said.

The Meraviglia will call at Port Canaveral and MSC Ocean Cay Reserve in the Bahamas and then return to New York.

Royal Caribbean International's Odyssey of the Seas is also currently still at Cape Liberty in Bayonne, N.J., according to CruiseMapper's live tracking. It had originally been scheduled to depart yesterday.

Snowfall began Sunday and is continuing across the region as of midday Monday, leading to thousands of airline cancellations and delays.

More than 15 inches of snow had accumulated in Central Park in Manhattan as of Monday morning, according to NBC News
