The cruise port of Roseau in Dominica welcomed the TUI
Cruises' Mein Schiff 3 on Jan. 28, the first cruise ship to call at the port
since Hurricane Maria in September.
The ship brought more than 2,000 passengers on a day-long
stop on the island, where several shore excursions were planned.
The Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, which reopened 41 of its 72
rooms earlier this month, hosted cruise visitors for tours during the call.
The Sea Cloud, the first ship to visit Dominica since Maria
hit, visited on Dec. 28 but did not call at Roseau because the port had not yet
reopened. The ship anchored at Purple Turtle Beach in Portsmouth, and the 200
passengers were tendered in.
Upcoming cruise lines visiting Dominica are MSC Cruises on
March 15, Windstar on March 21, TUI Cruises on March 25 and Pullmantur on March
26.
Dominica Electric Co. continues to work toward powering up
the entire island by April 2018. More than four months after Maria, 85% of customers
are still without electricity.
Thus far, Roseau, Portsmouth, Canfield Industrial Estate,
Bath Estate, Elmshall and parts of Goodwill have power.
Pagua Bay House is scheduled to reopen on Feb. 1, with four
refurbished cottages out of the six rooms utilizing solar efficient energy. The
restaurant already has reopened.
