Royal Caribbean taps foster mother as Freedom's godmother

NEW YORK -- Katherine Louise Calder will serve as godmother of Royal Caribbean Internationals Freedom of the Seas. NBCs Today show viewers chose Calder over two other candidates in a nationally televised contest.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement that Calder, a foster mother to more than 400 children in Portland, Ore., would be part of the May 12 christening ceremony for the vessel, which when it sails, will be the largest cruise ship in the world.

The cruise line added that it had looked for an extraordinary everyday person... as opposed to the customary choices of celebrities or dignitaries.

As godmother, Calder is awarded one free cruise for two per year for life on the Royal Caribbean ship of her choice.
