NEW ORLEANS -- Carnival Cruise Lines' Holiday departed on its May 5
cruise a day late after a series of security breaches prompted the
Coast Guard to disembark and rescreen passengers.
During the initial embarkation, a police officer unintentionally
brought a handgun on board, according to the Coast Guard; the
weapon was believed to have passed through security due to human
error, a statement from Carnival said.
In a separate incident, four bullets were discovered in the
Holiday's baggage loading area.
Due to the delayed departure, the Holiday skipped a port call in
Mexico.
Passengers were offered a full refund; those who elected to take
the cruise were given a $100 shipboard credit and a cruise credit
worth 25% of their original fare.
