Viking says a hydrogen-powered ship, the Viking Libra, is scheduled for delivery in late 2026 and will be capable of operating with zero emissions.
The ocean ship is under construction at Fincantieri's Ancona shipyard in Italy. Its next ocean ship, the Viking Astrea, also will be hydrogen-powered and delivered in 2027.
The 998-passenger ships will have a propulsion system based partially on liquefied hydrogen and fuel cells. Viking said the hybrid propulsion system will enable navigating and operating with zero emissions.
Viking and Fincantieri also said contracts have been signed for two additional ocean ships for delivery in 2031 and an option for two more in 2033.
The company expects to take delivery of 26 river ships by 2028 and 11 ocean ships by 2031. With these orders, Viking said it will have a total of 110 river ships in 2028 and 23 ocean and expedition ships in 2031.
