We had been hoping that President Obama would make some inspired choices in filling out his Cabinet for a second term, and he appears to have done so with the nomination of Sally Jewell to head the Interior Department.

An engineer by training, Jewell worked in the oil industry and in banking, and for the past eight years has served as CEO of REI, the respected retailer of outdoor gear. Who better to grapple with the management of natural resources and our public lands and national parks than an environmentalist and outdoor enthusiast with credentials such as these?

We hope she wins Senate confirmation, because she appears to have a unique blend of qualifications and experience that could make an outstanding secretary of the interior.
