The Vila Gale Collection Alter Real -- Equestrian Resort, Conference & Spa opened in August at the Royal Horse Farm in Alter do Chao in Portugal's Alentejo region.
The horse farm, which was founded in 1748, is set on nearly 2,000 acres of rolling countryside about two hours from Lisbon.
The property features 77 rooms, three outdoor swimming pools, a spa with a heated indoor pool and a restaurant serving Alentejo cuisine.
The hotel is in the luxury segment, but, naturally, it also has an equestrian bent. Guests can take guided tours of the Royal Horse Farm and participate in carriage rides, horseback rides and lessons at all skill levels.
The Vila Gale Collection Alter Real is the second hotel in Portugal to open under the Revive Program, which rehabs national historic sites. The first was the Vila Gale Collection Elvas, also in the Alentejo region, which opened a year ago.
