Destination wellness: A stay at the SHA Mexico resort

Located on the powder-soft white-sand beaches of Costa Mujeres just north of Cancun, SHA Mexico is the newest outpost of the SHA brand that was founded in Alicante, Spain. It positions itself as part luxury resort, part preventive health institute and part transformative life reset.

The resort, which opened in 2024, is SHA's second (a third, SHA Emirates, is coming in 2028). The company spent more than two decades refining its approach in Europe, building its reputation on what it calls the "SHA Method": a framework created by founder Alfredo Bataller Parietti after his own health transformation.

Rather than focusing on reactive medicine, the resort emphasizes proactive well-being through 10 pillars, among them advanced diagnostics, regenerative medicine, nutrition, emotional well-being and health education.

For those accustomed to wellness resorts centered around yoga schedules and green juice bars, SHA's approach immediately feels different, as every stay begins with a Functional Medicine consultation.

After a relaxing dinner and meditation class the first night, I started my first morning at SHA with a series of medical appointments, where physicians and health experts assessed my individual needs and goals to determine dietary recommendations, treatment pathways and personalized activities during my stay. It set the tone for the experience, which is highly tailored, data-driven and deeply individualized.

Whether a client arrives seeking support for stress management, sleep optimization, hormonal health, cognitive performance or healthy aging, every recommendation felt calibrated rather than prescribed. My goal was to focus on a blend of longevity, weight loss and detox, and SHA crafted a roadmap based on my own specific objectives.

Guests should keep in mind that a visit to SHA Mexico isn't a typical vacation -- and it likely won't feel like a vacation. Rather, it's a health retreat, where visitors are encouraged to bring back information they've learned and incorporate the practices into their daily life.

Whirlwind wellness

Admittedly, my trip sometimes felt more like a wellness health conference -- at a very nice hotel, with a schedule so packed that I didn't feel I had enough time to relax or enjoy the elaborate water therapies in the indoor pool, the forest-facing sauna, the outdoor pools or the beach.

Given the size of the facility and how spread out some of the treatment rooms are, I sometimes only had five to 10 minutes to get up several flights of stairs, over to another building, then down an elevator to an appointment.

(Guests with the time -- and money -- to spend a few more days at SHA in order to space out activities would likely be glad they did so.)

A sample day may include a morning calorimetry (to measure resting metabolism) followed by yoga, breakfast, a nutrition consultation, an osteopath consultation, acupuncture and lunch.

In the afternoon, guests can participate in a bioenergy assessment using electromagnetic field mapping, a personal training fitness session, cryotherapy, a massage and an IV transfusion, followed by dinner.

So many choices

SHA currently offers five core programs: Detox & Optimal Weight, Rebalance & Energize, Longevity & Prevention, Leader's Performance and Tailor-Made Programs, with new programs launched this year placing an increased focus on detoxification, longevity and cellular regeneration therapies.

The scale of offerings is astonishing, and in my opinion, a bit overwhelming. SHA provides more than 1,000 treatments spanning fitness training, gut health, women's hormonal wellness, cognitive optimization, weight management and preventive health strategies. A benefit, however, is that the itinerary is flexible and can be changed based on feedback from the initial medical consultations.

One particularly noteworthy distinction for U.S. travelers is that access to certain regenerative treatments in Mexico remain largely unavailable in the States, including stem cell and exosome therapies.

Advanced diagnostics further separate the resort from traditional wellness offerings. Guests may undergo body composition analysis and 3D body scanning while cognitive assessments evaluate mental performance and function. Cardiovascular status monitoring and nervous system activity testing provide additional insights into internal health metrics.

Despite the sophisticated technology, SHA rarely felt intimidating. The on-site doctors and practitioners guide guests through the trip with clarity, translating medical terminology into understandable insights rather than overwhelming guests with clinical jargon.

One of my favorite features is the opportunity to have a follow-up consultation after leaving the resort, if suggested by a doctor at SHA. Being able to check in with the nutritionist and osteopaths several weeks after returning home helped keep me on track and gave me answers to some questions that arose after my trip.

Accommodations reinforce the resort's identity. My oceanfront suite had a large living room, floor-to-ceiling windows framing expansive Caribbean views and an ocean-facing rain shower and soaking tub, all of which are standard across the property's 100 guestrooms.

My shaded balcony was long and came equipped with several chairs for relaxing, reading and watching the sunrise. Entry-level Deluxe Rooms begin at $753 per night.

Dining similarly reflects SHA's philosophy of personalized well-being. Nutritional recommendations are informed by each guest's initial consultation and woven into individualized meal plans throughout the stay. Rather than restrictive or joyless wellness cuisine, meals aim to demonstrate how precision nutrition can feel both satisfying and sustainable, including for guests with allergies and dietary restrictions.

As wellness travel increasingly shifts toward measurable outcomes and longer-term transformation, SHA Mexico feels well positioned to define what comes next. Travelers may arrive expecting a luxury escape on the Mexican Caribbean coast. However, many will likely leave with something more enduring: a new understanding of what health can look like and, if they're like me, a new blueprint for how to pursue it.
