The launch of a walking route through the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve 62 miles south of Cancun near Tulum has opened a new tourist option for visitors with an interest in nature and archaeology.
The hike begins at the Muyil Archaeological zone that dates from 1200 and “is one of the few sites that combines the historic appeal with lush vegetation and spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea,” according to Marco Antonio Palet, director of communications and culture for the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.
The Mayan settlement features pyramids, temples and altars.
Sian Ka’an (Heaven’s Gate in the Mayan language) is Mexico’s third-largest biosphere reserve and was designated a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1987.
