Ellis Island Casino & Hotel, a nearly 60-year-old casino just east of the Las Vegas Strip, opened the first phase of its $35 million expansion and renovation this month.

The new space doubles the casino floor and includes a bar, a high-limit gaming area and Boomer's Sportsbook. The Deck, a rooftop bar with views of the Strip, also debuted this month.

"With this first phase, we're proud to debut a renewed aesthetic and gaming floor that elevates the property and overall guest experience while continuing to honor our history and deeply held values," said Gary Ellis, owner of Ellis Island Casino.

The renovation includes a new facade with a screen with more than 1,200 square feet of LED lights, a revised porte cochere and fresh landscaping.

What's new in the casino

The new casino floor has marble columns, wood finishes, plush carpeting, large windows with automatic shades, a chandelier and custom artwork. The new Center Bar features 25 seats with bar-top games and a 50-foot-by-11-foot LED screen.

In addition to the new high-limit gaming area, the 35,000-square-foot casino floor offers an expanded gaming pit and hundreds of new slot machines. Sandwich shop Via Focaccia and Metro Pizza reopened in the new space.

"This expansion is about creating energy and connection --an elevated yet inviting environment that builds on the property's legacy while introducing bold new experiences," said Suzanne Steelman Taylor, vice president of strategy at Steelman Partners, the project's architect. "Every detail was designed to engage guests and make this favorite destination feel both dynamic and refreshingly new."

The Deck bar, atop the casino expansion off Koval Lane, is a new vantage point for such events as the Formula 1 Heineken Las Vegas Grand Prix and New Year's Eve fireworks. Seasonal cocktails include the Full Deck, made with Elijah Craig bourbon, Luxardo Del Santo liqueur, lime and simple syrup. Flatbreads, charcuterie and seasonal specials are on the food menu.

More to come

A refresh of the remaining portion of the casino floor, to be completed by the end of the year, will conclude the project. The Village Pub & Cafe and the Front Yard, an indoor-outdoor beer garden serving craft beers, will remain open during the work.
