Small changes impress at Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island

Lounging at one of two pools, enjoying a waterslide, relaxing on the beach, high-end dining and shallow-water snorkeling at a nearby artificial reef are all options for guests of the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa.

And now guests can enjoy those amenities amid the comforts of $6.8 million in recently completed refurbishments.

The upgrades completed in April aren't the type of items that cry for attention, such as an expansion or a major remodel. Rather, they're the sorts of changes that make a stay at the resort, like the one I enjoyed as an invited guest in early June, a more sensory-pleasing experience.

Hallways, too, have new carpeting.  So does the lobby, which was renovated last year.

Through the lobby's floor-to-ceiling windows guests can look to a broad, renovated patio, where the fountain has been refinished with mosaic tiles..

Meanwhile, in the bar that connects to 3800 Ocean, the resort has added a 14-seat communal high-top table as well as numerous charging stations for electronic devices.

In aggregate, the refurbishments, mainly undertaken in light colors and wavy patterns, are designed to give the resort an elegant but beachy feel, according to Carly Retz-Leone, the property's catering sales manager.

I certainly enjoyed those upgrades during my stay. I spent Saturday morning working out in the fitness center and then relaxing my mind by the pool over Erik Larson's "Dead Wake," about the famed sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.

In the afternoon I relaxed my body courtesy of the combined deep tissue and Swedish massage that is the signature offering at the resort's SiSpa.

And after a quick round of golf in the late afternoon on the nearby municipal North Palm Beach Country Club course, I journeyed back to the hotel for an evening at the upscale 380 Ocean restaurant. There, I dined on Connecticut Blue Point oysters and scallops that the wait staff assured me had been caught that day; a coconut curry sauce along with broccoli, peppers and yucca augmented the scallops. I topped off the meal with a glass of Makers Mark bourbon.

It's fair to say that it was a pretty good day.

With its beachfront location and fine dining, the resort is quite popular with couples. But its all-suite model, its active Kids Club and the waterslide at the Lagoon Pool make the Singer Island Marriott a big hit with families, too.
Rooms are available in the summer from the mid-$200s, Retz-Leone said. Go to the resort's website for more information.
