AmaWaterways has teamed up with Smithsonian Journeys on Europe river cruises featuring art historians, archaeologists, scientists and anthropologists.
The partnership will debut in April 2026 with 33 departures on the Danube, Rhine, Douro, Seine and Rhone.
Smithsonian Journeys also partners with Ponant on small-ship ocean cruises, but this is its first alliance with a river cruise company. The river cruises range from eight to 15 days and are available for booking now.
Two experts will be aboard each ship and give onboard lectures. They include Tiffany Florvil, an associate professor of modern European history at the University of New Mexico; Tom Dawson, an archaeologist and professorial research fellow at the University of St. Andrews; and Valerie Hedquist, an art history professor at the University of Montana.
Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice president of Smithsonian Journeys, said, "These trips provide a bevy of new options for intellectually curious travelers to indulge in the rich history and cultures of countries such as Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal through the unique lens of the Smithsonian."
