Criterion Travel, a tour operator that specializes in educational travel for affinity groups, will offer a river cruise on the Mississippi next year.

The cruise will begin on March 3 in Memphis and end March 11 in New Orleans.

The cruise will be open to independent travelers, which is rare for the operator.

Passengers will cruise on the American Splendor, a paddlewheeler owned by American Cruise Lines.

The itinerary features a keynote delivered in Memphis by presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Other highlights include visiting Creole heritage sites, lectures on Mississippi's influence on U.S. history and an excursion to the National Civil Rights Museum.

Prices start at $8,990 per person. The cruise is limited to 160 passengers.
