AAA says a record 122.4 million Americans are expected to travel this holiday season (Dec. 20 to Jan. 1), a 2.2% increase over last year's record, 119.7 million.

Most of those people (109.5 million) will travel by car, a 2% increase. Another 8.03 million will fly, up 2.3% compared to last year. AAA said this year's projected number of air travelers would be a record, surpassing 8 million for the first time.

Airline tickets average nearly $900 this year, up 7% compared to last year.

AAA projects 4.9 people will travel by bus, train or cruise, up 9%. The number of bus, train and cruise travelers has increased a whopping 25% since 2019, which AAA attributes to high cruise demand.

Domestically, the top 10 destinations are Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Los Angeles/Anaheim, Honolulu, Tampa, New York, Maui, Dallas/Fort Worth and Las Vegas.

Internationally, the top 10 destinations are Cancun, Punta Cana, Cozumel, San Jose (Costa Rica), Puerto Vallarta, San Juan, the Bahamas, Rome, Aruba and Sydney.
