Having had three recent technology failures, Alaska Air Group has hired IT consulting firm Accenture to conduct a comprehensive audit of its technology systems.
Alaska was impacted by an Oct. 29 outage within the Microsoft Azure platform, which hosts several systems for Alaska and Hawaiian airlines. That failure crashed online check-in capabilities for several hours for both airlines.
On Oct. 23, a failure at Alaska's primary data center caused an eight-hour ground stop and led to more than 400 cancellations over the following two days. The failure impacted more than 50,000 Alaska customers via cancellations and delays.
Three months earlier, a July 21 Alaska ground stop was caused by a technology failure. It led to more than 200 cancellations and impacted more than 15,000 customers.
"The collaboration with Accenture will include a top-to-bottom review of Alaska's technology environment -- assessing standards, processes, and overall system health -- with actionable recommendations to be implemented quickly," Alaska announced.
