Allegiant Air aims to make Mexico its first international
market.
On Monday, the discount carrier filed an application with
the Department of Transportation for authority to operate scheduled service to
Mexico.
"Issuance of the authority requested by Allegiant would
be in the public interest," Allegiant counsel Aaron Goerlich wrote in the
application. "Allegiant is well-known for its innovative, low-cost,
traffic-stimulating service, which will enhance competition in the transborder
leisure travel market."
Allegiant has yet to reveal any details. The company said it
would later announce routes and launch dates.
Allegiant already flies charter operations to Mexico.
However, among the mainline U.S. carriers it's the only one other than Hawaiian
without Mexico scheduled service.
