Belgian carrier Delsey Airlines shuts down

NEW YORK -- Transatlantic Belgian carrier Delsey Airlines -- launched as a successor to bankrupt Sabena -- ceased operations just five months after its first flight and closed its U.S. call center.

A Belgian commercial court in Antwerp on Nov. 6 granted the carrier's bankruptcy request and appointed caretakers to oversee the company's remaining assets.

The airline offered service on three Airbus A330-200 jets from Brussels to New York, Boston and Los Angeles.

Delsey -- initially launched as VG Airlines but renamed after a popular luggage brand this summer -- had its wings clipped just one year after the bankruptcy of Sabena.

Inquiries should be directed to the carrier's Belgian call center at (011) 32-3 303-0000.

Meanwhile, the airline's short-haul counterpart, SN Brussels Airlines -- which picked up Sabena's European and African routes -- has had better luck staying aloft.

The carrier recently increased service to its 37 European and 13 African destinations, and announced plans to lease three new Airbus A319 jets by March, bringing its fleet to a total of 35 planes.
