Delta is the latest carrier to announce new flights to Mexico as a more liberal air agreement between the U.S. and Mexico takes effect.

Beginning Dec. 17, the carrier will begin daily flights between JFK and Cancun and between Los Angeles and Los Cabos. In addition, Delta will start weekly Saturday service between Kansas City and Cancun.

On its JFK-Cancun service, Delta will compete with American, AeroMexico and JetBlue. Delta will compete with American on the weekly Kansas City-Cancun route. The carrier will go against four other airlines servicing Los Angeles-Los Cabos, including Southwest, which only announced its own plans to begin that service last week.

Under the new U.S.-Mexico aviation agreement, there are no limits on the number of carriers that can serve any city pair. The previous agreement between the two countries limited markets to three airlines from each country.

The new Delta routes must still receive regulatory approval.
