United and American each announced new routes to the Far East.
On July 13, United will start thrice-weekly service between its San Francisco hub and the eastern Chinese metropolis of Hangzhou.
The flight will be the first transpacific service into Hangzhou, a city with a metropolitan population of more than 21 million that lies just southwest of Shanghai, at the southern terminus of the Grand Canal of China.
Hangzhou will be United’s fifth mainline China destination and it 14th Asia-Pacific destination.
American, meanwhile, will begin daily service from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on Sept. 7. Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific already flies the route, and fellow Oneworld member American is a codeshare partner.
American's flight will be operated as part of its joint venture with Japan Airlines.
