United has agreed to purchase 15 Overture jets from Boom Supersonic, with an option for an additional 35 aircraft. The airline is eyeing a 2025 launch.

Boom said Overture planes will be capable of flying at speeds of Mach 1.7 -- twice the speed of today's fastest commercial planes. United suggested future potential routes are Newark-London in three-and-a-half hours, Newark-Frankfurt in four hours and San Francisco-Tokyo in six hours.

Boom said aircraft will be powered by sustainable aviation fuel. The companies will work together on meeting safety, operating and sustainability requirements before delivery, United said.
