As previously reported in TravelWeekly.coms own Travel Confidential April 3, its been confirmed: The Ford Motor Co. and Hertz have revealed theyll be teaming up once again to relaunch an exclusive promotion the two companies first created back in the 1960s.

During the 1960s, the Rent-A-Racer program gave consumers a chance to rent a Shelby GT350H, a limited edition, modified Ford Mustang that was one of the hottest muscle cars of the day.

Under the new Rent-A-Racer program, consumers will be able to rent a new, performance-modified version of the Ford Mustang GT designated Shelby GT-H (as in Hertz).

Like the original Hertz cars, the Ford Shelby GT-H will be fun to drive, said Carroll Shelby, legendary auto racer and CEO of Shelby Automobiles, in a statement. We started with a terrific Mustang and modified it with some Ford go-fast parts and gave it a distinct look for Shelby-style driving. Whoever gets the opportunity to rent one of these unique cars will get an experience of a lifetime.

The Shelby GT holds a special place in hearts of car enthusiasts. Shelby, who designed the new version, also modified the original GT. Less than 1,000 were made by the time they went out of production in the mid-60s ... until now.

Hertz said approximately 500 units will be available through the Hertz Fun Collection at select airport locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The Hertz Fun Collection includes other hotly sought after vehicles including the Mazda Miata, the Toyota Solara, the PT Cruiser, the Chrysler Sebring, the Chevy HHR, the Nissan 350Z, the Ford Escape XLT Sport, the Jeep Wrangler, the Nissan Murano and the Hummer H3.
