Marriott International reached an agreement for a new 1,000-room Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston.

The hotel, to be developed by Rida Development Corp., will break ground next year and is scheduled to open in 2016.

The property will have more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space and will have a skyway connection to the Houston Convention Center.

Houston hotels have benefited from limited new supply and continued growth from a strong oil-exploration sector. Through the first nine months of the year, Houston’s revenue per available room (RevPAR) jumped 13.7% from a year earlier, trailing only Oahu’s 14.3% growth rate, according to STR.
