MOUNT POCONO, Pa. -- One of Pennsylvania's legendary resorts has
ceased operations, citing the downturn in the economy and a falloff
in bookings since Sept. 11.
Mount Airy Resort opened in 1898 but has struggled in recent
years.
Its parent Pocono Associates acquired the property via
foreclosure in May 2000.
The resort is in the process of getting in touch with booked
guests and is refunding all deposits.
The Mount Airy compound includes 895 hotel rooms, an 18-hole
golf course, three miniature golf courses, two ice rinks, indoor
and outdoor swimming pools and tennis courts, a shooting range and
stables.
According to managing director and vice president of Mount Airy
Resort Don Corbosiero, the resort is in talks with Paradise
Township officials about a repositioning plan for the property.
"We are evaluating a wide range of alternatives, including the
sale of all or a portion of the property," he said.
