BALTIMORE -- The Renaissance Harborplace Hotel is located just steps from the harbor's waterfront here and made the ideal home base for our visit to the city.

The property, built over a four-story shopping mall, has a total of 622 guest rooms on eight floors, including 38 suites throughout and 94 guest rooms on the restricted access Club Level floor.

Our double room on the Club floor had a partial view of the Inner Harbor and was spacious. There were two beds, a two-seat table, a dresser and ample closet space.

In-room amenities included a minibar, a coffeemaker, an iron and ironing board, cable television, a Sony Playstation, an alarm clock and two phones with data ports.

The bathroom also had Bath & Body Works toiletries, a hair dryer, a black-and-white television and a phone connected directly to the front desk.

Guests on the Club floor have use of the Club lounge throughout the day, serving a limited continental breakfast and afternoon and evening drinks and hors d'oeuvres. The floor also has its own concierge on duty.

Cigar aficionados will find a haven in the Windows Lounge, just outside the restaurant on the fifth floor. The lounge featured a vast selection of cigars and after-dinner drinks, served to the accompaniment of piano music and live entertainment.

The Windows Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and is known for its crab cakes, a must-have while in Baltimore.

Meeting space in the hotel includes the largest ballroom in Maryland, the Maryland Ballroom, with 14,650 square feet, and a junior ballroom, the Baltimore Ballroom, with 4,070 square feet.

Additional meeting space includes 18 meeting rooms, including 10 breakout rooms with harbor views, and a 7,000-square-foot prefunction area.

Renaissance Harborplace Hotel is part of the Gallery at Harborplace, a mixed-use complex with 75 shops, restaurants and an office tower.

The hotel has direct access to the shopping mall via an open space near its meetings facilities that connects to the escalators in the mall. The property's location also is across the street from and connected by a skywalk to Harborplace, a shopping area made up of two pavilions.

Room rates at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel range from $215 for standard rooms to $235 for Harborview rooms. Club Level accommodations start at $245. The hotel is 15 minutes from BWI airport, 10 minutes from Baltimore's Penn Station and six blocks from Washington, D.C., light rail access.
