San Juan Marriott to undergo $35M refurbishment project

Phase one of a $35 million renovation project is underway at the 525-room San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in the Condado section of San Juan to bring the property into sync with other luxury resorts.

The 21-story property first opened in 1964 as a Sheraton hotel, later transitioned to the Dupont Plaza Hotel & Casino, was destroyed by a fire in late 1986 and closed for a total refurbishment. The property reopened in 1995 under the Marriott name and was last refurbished in 2001.

The casino is the first facility in the resort to be expanded and upgraded with completion set for early June. While work is underway, the existing casino remains in operation 24 hours a day. The finished product will have 12,700 square feet of gaming space, 470 slot machines and a casino bar.

Following that, the 402 rooms in the main tower will close until December for a total renovation that will include Marriotts new bedding scheme, with 300-thread count sheets; new comforters and duvet covers; thicker mattresses and fluffier pillows.

Meanwhile, the 123-room cabana wing also be renovated to incorporate new accommodations and suites but will remain open during that phase of the renovation.

Construction and renovations are scheduled to be completed by December, and the hotel expects to fully reopen for the holiday season.
