OAK BROOK, Ill. -- Abercrombie & Kent, which began by operating
safaris in Kenya in the early 1960s, is now offering safaris in an
unlikely location: Canada.
Upon closer examination, it's not as strange as it may sound.
British Columbia is the home of some of the last surviving
temperate rain forests.
A&K's destination is the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort on
Vancouver Island, a floating lodge on Clayoquot Sound.
The resort has established a wilderness camp with safari-style
canvas tents built on raised, wooden platforms. Inside the tents
are Adirondack beds, Oriental rugs, antique furnishings and down
duvets. Each tent has a furnished porch that looks out over the
Bedwell River.
The resort also has two private lakes, a waterfall-fed pool,
horse stables and a full-service spa.
The camp is remote enough that city lights do not interfere with
the night sky. Bears and moose are frequently spotted, and
opportunities for freshwater or saltwater fishing are
plentiful.
