NEW YORK -- American Airlines said it would not impose a rule change that would have prohibited the combination of lower point-to-point fares ("sum of locals") where published through fares existed.

American had filed the change with the Air Tariff Publishing Co. but pulled it without comment. Some agents had become aware of the filing when the Airfare Report issued a "travel agent alert." Initial reaction was irate.
