Amusement park group slates convention for Atlanta

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions will hold its 81st Annual Convention and Trade Show from Nov. 16 to 20 in Atlanta.

More than 30,000 people, about 25% of whom are from abroad, are expected to attend the show, which is being staged at the Georgia World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome.

"The amusement industry continues to push the envelope in order to fulfill the public's ever-increasing desire for innovative thrills," said John Graff, president and chief executive officer of the association.

Organizers expect the November session, featuring the latest in rides, games, merchandise and food, to reap more than $1 million from delegates buying the newest products and services.

In addition, attendees will have a chance to participate in as many as 60 free workshops and seminars with titles such as:

  • Motivation Locomotion
  • Signage Guideline Summit
  • The Future of Themed Entertainment
  • How to Make All Guest Experiences Entertaining
  • Teen Power
  • A three-part workshop series addressing crisis planning, management and communications also is scheduled.

Delegates also can participate (for an additional fee) in a tour highlighting food and beverage operations hosted by Six Flags Over Georgia and a water park tour to White Water.

IAAPA's annual convention also serves as the platform for award presentations honoring members for special achievements.

These include four categories for best exhibit; service awards in five categories; Souvenir of the Year awards; Brass Ring awards (for originality and creative excellence in marketing), and Spirit of Excellence awards recognizing a facility's commitment to the training and development of industry personnel.

The IAAPA membership includes owners and operators of amusement parks, theme parks, water parks, zoos, family entertainment centers, aquariums and attractions.
